Course Description
For nearly 20 years, we’ve been immersed in the world of lighting design as glassmakers in NYC and beyond—through our fabrication studio J & R Bauer, Inc., our brand The Third Rooom, and our own artistic practices. Along the way, we’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, and how to transform an idea into a luminous reality.
In this class, you’ll demystify the art of lighting while creating your own tabletop and pendant light (hardware included!). Together, we’ll explore the many types of lighting—flush mounts, pendants, sconces, floor lamps, chandeliers, sculptural pieces, and more—while unpacking the essentials: glass, hardware, bulbs, plugs, cords, and everything in between. We’ll also touch on the differences between commercial and residential applications so you understand how your designs can live in various spaces.
Our main focus, however, will be on glass—its possibilities, challenges, and beauty in lighting design. In the hot shop and cold shop, you’ll learn and practice techniques such as hot popping, drilling, blowing, forming, cutting, grinding, sculpting, and coloring. By the end, you’ll walk away with two finished lights of your own creation, as well as the knowledge and confidence to keep designing.
